Cycle Route to bristol & Bath
One of our visitors has kindly documented an easy way to get to Bristol or Bath from Woodside Field via a Cycle track. Thank you Jon, I am sure are future guests will enjoy this.

Having been to rallies a few times at Woodside Field, there have been various reasons for not getting to make it to the Bath/Bristol disused railway line path.
There appeared to be no quick, easy route, avoiding major roads til we found this route and it takes you into Bristol town centre (which was surprisingly to us, an absolute cracker by the harbour) and Bath town centre where you can go along the Avon and Kennet canal or go on the circular 2 tunnel cycle route
You leave the immaculate Woodside Field via the main lockable gate and turn left up the hill and ready to descend the rather steep hill.

After carefully descending the hill, noting how much electric you will require to get back up it later, you get to the main road, with a marked up cycle route along it, however we found the pavement was more than good enough and probably wiser.

After about 2 kms you approach a roundabout, at this point cross the road and either take the roundabout as you would in a car or round on the pavement. you will be going straight across into what appears to be a dual carriageway towards Coalpit Heath

Pic3

But it has a dedicated cycle lane to start with.

Pic4

which very quickly turns into a separated section with chevron dividers from the motor traffic

pic5

Following this route until you get to this junction, still with dedicated cycle route where you turn left

pic6

You then come across a roundabout which you can easily jump onto the footpath for if you wanted, but its fine and no concern

pic7

and carrying on along the cycle lane you get to Shire Way where you turn left

pic8
And this is now a residential area with 30 MPH well observed limit but no dedicated cycle path. Really not an issue. and keep cycling (maybe 1500 m) until you get to this gate at a Zebra crossing and you can choose which gate you prefer to go through

pic10

You are now off road, away from all traffic, on a dedicated cycle lane.
And the first obstacle is impassable whilst riding ! as you go over the railway line

pic11

and you come into a lovely green area with disabled park bench

pic12

After another obstacle you get to here where you join a back road by turning right

pic13

You get to freewheel past the willows and down to the old rectory where it does get busy as you need to turn left onto the road (or cross over and use the pavement against the traffic) for about 400 m
pic14

Then turn right at Wot Not and back off road again

Pic15

Back off road you now go over the railway using the crossing and checking both ways

pic16

Until you leave the single track and turn left heading out of a cul de sac

pic17

At the end of ths cul de sac there is a main road. Just go straight onto the right hand footpath and you are on a dedicated cycle route far away from the traffic

pic18

More free wheeling you get to a junction and stay on the path

Pic19

and use the island to cross

pic20

No more roads or crossing roads from here and you are on this art of path

pic21

You may well notice along this bit there is a sewerage plant ! You then get to cross the railway again

pic22

and take a quick left

pic23

And you are now on old raliway line. This bit appears to be a branch line of the Bath Bristol which led to a colliery

pic24

Along here is a sweeping downhill right hander (NB the lovely tarmac)

pic25

This leads between some old slag heaps and you have a roundabout (of sorts) with other cycle paths. You go straight over until you get to the remnants of a railway station

pic27

There is a path to the left which is a small shortcut to Bath but best to keep going til the junction where you hit the Bath/Bristol railway pathwith Bath clearly marked as 10 miles

pic28

Then the old sign which clearly marks Bath as 9 3/4 and Bristol 6

pic29

We have done both routes and the path is a corker. Tunnels en route to Bristol and nice railway stations en route to Bath.
It is 15kms From Woodside Field to this point then either 16 or 10 to the major cities. It is very easy cycling
Enjoy
